Many of you have been asking what lighting system I use when shooting family portraits outside, well here it is. I use two SB-800 flash units, and sometimes three, I trigger them with pocket wizards , this is a great portable system that works very well, and is great for quick easy set up without all of umbrellas and large battery packs. I use this system indoors as well.The great thing about this system is the consistency of lighting you get, it does not matter how far back you shoot or how close the lighting never moves. I love to shoot with my 70-200 2.8 lens, and this system allows me the ability to get way back and zoom in without worrying about loss of light from any distance.

I like to use reflectors when I need a more diffused look or natural lighting look. Works great for Bridals


You can adjust the angle and area/intensity of light reflection by how close or far away you place your speed-lights.

I always fire my flashes in Manual mode, this way I know exactly how much output I will get every time.

"Fav 1" You guys know what I am talking about. Yes hard to dispute, these two girls are two of the cutest kids ever! It was 19 degrees outside when we took these, with the help of a couple of breaks to get warm and some hand warmers, we made it through the shoot with flying colors, despite a face plant in the snow :)

This was a very fun and colorful wedding. I shot almost all of the indoor pictures at ISO 1600-3200, no flash or fill light was used. I have been blown away at the low noise even at high ISO's that I get with the D300, 3 years ago you would never have been able to get this kind of quality at ISO 800 on a digital camera. Its amazing how far the technology has progressed.

I recently came across this article and wanted to share it.

How to look 10 pounds thinner in photos.

Secret No. 1: Turn partially sideways to the camera, planting one foot in front of the other. Point your toe to the camera and place your weight on your back foot.

Secret No. 2: Pull head forward slightly to minimize any appearance of the double chin

Secret No. 3: Hold arms slightly away from your body. This keeps upper arm flab from flattening out and therefore appearing flabbier (much like thighs do when one sits on a couch).

Secret No. 4: Pull shoulders back, chest forward and gently suck stomach in. Be careful not to suck stomach so far in that your ribs show, thereby causing those who later see the photo to cluck to themselves in a bemused, sing-song voice, "She's sucking i-in."

Secret No. 5: If you can get away with it without looking like a "wannabe", try the look away trick. To do this, look away from the camera, then turn towards it, breaking into a smile just before the camera clicks. Your smile will appear fresh, not frozen. This trick takes practice behind closed, locked doors.

When taking a photo it's also important the photographer does not snap the picture from below. This adds another 20-50 pounds to the 10 pounds automatically and annoying added by the camera. Find out why cameras add 10 pounds in this article by Geek Sugar
